Dr.
Paul Faulkner, in his book titled “Making things right when things go wrong”,
has this to say “If you want to get things turned around, if you want to set
the world straight, if you want to get your act together, you have to get your
attitude right”. Your disposition sets
you apart in one way or another- a positive or negative way. Right attitudes are the foundation stones of
successful living. All that you are and
do today is the sum total of your thoughts and attitudes of yesterday. Karl
Menninger, a celebrated psychiatrist, said “Attitudes are more important than
facts”. In the same vein, David Oyedepo said “You need the right attitude to
get to the altitude”.
Psychological
tests reveal that our responses towards others are determined more by our
attitudes than by what others actually do. It’s all in how we look at things.
Negative
attitudes toward people and things distort our mental capacity to see things as
they really are. So, we respond foolishly or irrationally to the bogus notions
our minds invent about people and events.
We behave the way we do because we choose to. So, what determines the way we behave is not
background in essence but choice. The
key is this; not only can we change our attitudes; we can change them in any
set of circumstance.
When
you face the cold, hard reality what do you do? Do you turn in to depression
and frustration and then begin to transfer aggression to the people around you
and begin to see the wrong in every single person and event? After seven years
or more of determined and time-intensive search for job and you did not get
any, what do you do? Do you fall into the grave hands of anxiety and
deprivation? All is about choice to
turn-on the switch for the right attitude.
According
to Lord Byron, “we can choose our attitude in any set of circumstance”. Abraham
Lincoln supported this by saying “People are about happy as they choose to be”.
William James, the noted Harvard Psychiatrist, has this to say; “The greatest
discovery in our generation (and that’s a lot of territory) is that human
beings by changing the inner attitudes of their minds, can change all the outer
aspects of their life”. It is on this
light that Dr. Viktor Frankl, the German Psychiatrist said “The last great
human freedom is the ability to choose one’s attitude in any given
circumstance”. He went on to say “Life ultimately means taking the
responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the task
which is constantly set for each individual”.
It doesn’t really matter what we expect from life but what matters is
what life expects from us. It is on
this that I agree with Dr. Paul Faulkner that the first step to recovery is
putting the right attitude called believing. I add to this also that this right
attitude is the first step to discovery, maintaining and sustaining great
success. You can’t beat this!
To
keep to the right attitude, you have to;
Think
positively
David
Oyedepo in his book titled “Success Buttons” has this to say; “saturate your
mind with success truth. Associate with successful people. Observe success materials and success
teachings. Get acquainted with them. Allow them to take hold of your thinking
and you’ll notice a divine transformation in your life. This is to motivate you
set and keep the pace of positivity. So,
you have to be careful of what you think. Think success and not failure,
prosperity not poverty, think self-esteem and not self-deprivation . . . .” if
you can not think it right, you won’t achieve it right. Our actions are
products of our thoughts so our displays or actions are pre-determined
thoughts.
Be
cheerful and joyful always.
Do
not let your circumstances determine your mood at any time but always be
cheerful and joyful. Do not make life perceive you as running away from who you
are. Whenever you get tensed, learn to smile. In doing so, you relax your
system and have absolute control over your actions and your conditions.
Be
thankful always.
Gratitude
determines altitude. Whatever you can not appreciate will depreciate in your
hands. Even when you are receiving that rejection letter, say thank you at
least for the attention they gave to you. You may not know how expensive “Thank
You” is until you refuse to give it out. In all situations, be grateful.
Don’t
give up
You’ve
to brace up with challenges and know that nothing good comes easy. So you must
always apply the principles of doggedness and ultimate reality. Quitters never
achieve greatness. Do not give up
because you might just be a step away from your that job of your dream. Your
case is never closed until you close it. Keep the channel open and always make
sure you maintain a steady communication.
Decide
to be a servant.
According
to David Abioye in Shiloh 2012 Telecast, the spirit of servanthood is the
platform for empowerment and enthronement.
If you are not prepared to serve, you won’t be empowered to rule. In essence, there is no exaltation without
service. This is where the principle of
ultimate reality will tell you to start with what you have. Do not reject a job
because the salary is meager especially when you are starting life and you
really know that that’s where your
passion lies, rather take it as a place of apprenticeship. By the time you’ll
graduate, you’d have gotten the necessary expertise needed to stand for
ultimate negotiation. What is in you
determines what comes upon you. You can be employed with the poor grade
certificate if you can be able to show that you are willing to serve and not to
be served. Servanthood is the gateway to
leadership. Until you become a certified servant, you won’t become an
accredited leader. Don’t pay to go up,
serve your way up.
